As a veteran, I am incredibly proud of my service in the Army. However, I am also incredibly humbled by the service of others, whose tours were much more challenging and dangerous than my own journey.
PTSD & Suicide – A Scary Statistic
Unfortunately, for many of us, separation from the military does not separate us from our feelings generated through the military. Many of us suffer from PTSD and face painful memories, anxiety, panic attacks, or worse. Our fellow veterans often turn to drug abuse, alcohol, and other self-medicating substances. Their minds are filled with depression, anger, and negativity with limited support from veteran’s services, friends, or family. As is often said, they train us for war but offer little to no training on how to return from war.
According to the website StopSoldierSuicide.org, we are losing 22 veterans per day to suicide. Let that number sink in for a minute. 22 soldiers, who have bravely served their country and survived incredible hardship, return home only to lose the battle that continues to wage on in their own minds.
The above website offers a variety of support options, and is trying to raise money to create a 24-hour call center operated by both active duty military and veterans to support military personnel in crisis. I believe this is a noble cause. I believe this is a good mission that aims to take care of those who have risked everything to take care of all of us.
Donate to Support!
In an attempt to support this organization, and to raise awareness about PTSD and soldier suicide, I will be offering electronic copies of my book, Service, A Soldier’s Journey: Counterintelligence, Law Enforcement, and the Violence of Urban Education, for just $0.99 on Amazon Kindle for all purchases made on Veteran’s Day. All Veteran’s Day proceeds will be donated to StopSoldierSuicide.org!
In my book, I describe my own personal experiences with PTSD in hopes of spreading awareness as to how it affects soldiers so family and support can better-understand what is happening and how to help.
Please encourage your friends and family to contribute and purchase a copy (for $0.99), and support a great cause. If you are interested in donating directly to the organization, please click HERE for details.
I will also be donating all proceeds from any paperback purchases made as well!
Once the promotion ends, I will follow up with the number of sales made and the amount donated. Thank you all for your continued support. It means the world to me.
Be. The. Change.
