Searching for Bill Finds a Community of People Who Care

On Wednesday, November 27th, at approximately 6:15 a.m., Bill Schwenger left his home and never returned.  Since then, his family has been conducting an exhaustive search through creeks, woods, neighborhoods, shelters, and even online.

Bill is a loving father, grandfather, and husband.  One does not have to look far to see how much people who know him care about him.  His children, along with their friends and family, have been out day and night following up on every lead that comes their way, hoping to find that one piece of information that will reunite them with their father.  When they are not following leads or meeting with police, they are out searching, or home planning their next move.

“She really loves her dad.  He is always there for her.  He always supported her,” said a friend of Bill’s daughter.  “He’s a really good dad, and he loves his grandkids.  He looks forward to family dinners during the week.”

In an attempt to consolidate information and to give friends and family a place to offer well wishes, prayers, and suggestions, a Facebook page was created.  Within the first few hours, “Find Bill Schwenger” had several hundred followers.  Two days later, the page had 1,870 followers.

“Do not know this family, but (the) Drexel Hill/Clifton area is our home and any one family suffering makes an impact on our communities.  My prayers for this husband, father, and grandfather,” writes one of the pages followers.

“I saw this on FB.  I live in Delco, please let me know if there is anything I can do,” writes another.

As one scrolls through the page, there are hundreds of comments similar to those mentioned above.  There has been an outpouring of support from this community and beyond.  Most of these followers are total strangers, but have felt a connection to Bill and his family simply because they recognize the hardship they are facing.  For some it reminds them of their own hardships and they have shared their personal experiences in hopes of giving searchers some insight and ideas in where to look next.  Others have investigative experience and have offered contact information for various investigative resources.  In addition, some followers are providing information on possible sightings and reviewing surveillance cameras in their places of business or hanging posters with Bill’s picture in their businesses and neighborhoods.  Everyone is working together, and everyone is trying to help.

During such a sad and difficult time, it is inspiring to see this outpouring of love and support coming from total strangers.  It is inspiring to see people sending their love and offering to help someone they have never met.  It is inspiring to receive phone calls and emails from concerned citizens reporting possible sightings of Bill.  As the search grows, so does this community, and so does my appreciation for them.

Through social media we have a means to connect and a means to help one another during times of need.  We are able to support police investigators by being the eyes and ears in the neighborhoods being searched.  Connections are being made, and more resources are being brought in.  We are coming together, working towards a common goal, which is to locate Bill and support his family.  I am thankful for all of you.  I am thankful for all of the kind things you have said, the leads you have provided us, and for your support of this family during their time of need.

At Service of Change our motto is: “Small changes among the masses can have a massive impact across the world.”  I can’t help but to wonder, however, as this community continues to grow, what our world would be like if we always showed this level of support for our fellow citizens in need. Your small changes/contributions are having a massive impact.  Thank you, community friends.  Thank you for all of your continued support.
