We are also joined through our service.  We rise to the call of duty each day, and risk our lives in the name of our service not just to the citizens we swore to protect, but also to one another.”

Dennis Nappi II: Soldier, Cop, & Teacher

Me @ Clymer Promo (2)Dennis Nappi II is a former soldier and counterintelligence special agent.  After completing a tour in Bosnia, Sergeant Nappi became a police officer in New Castle County, Delaware.  Eventually, Officer Nappi realized a greater need in a violent Philadelphia middle school special-education classroom, where his military and police training were put to the test.

Dennis has launched a campaign of advocacy and reform on behalf of students in today’s schools.  His book, Service, details his experiences from the war-torn Bosnia, to the streets of New Castle County, to a Philadelphia classroom.  Dennis brings to light the state of desparation affecting so many of our youth today, and makes a strong argument for the need to reform not only our system of education, but the relationships between police officers and the citizens of their communities, and the need to improve our support of service members who receive so much training for war, but not enough training on how to re-assimilate back into civilian life.

In the education portion of Service, Dennis writes:

“…I challenge you to try to teach them.  Encourage them and listen to them.  Listen to their stories of home, with drunken mothers, jailed fathers, and bullet-filled brothers.  And once you have become a part of them, once you have given yourself to them, then I challenge you to come up with a plan to help them…”
